Mike Muller

Mike Muller is a Visiting Adjunct Professor at the Witwatersrand University School of Governance. A registered professional engineer and honorary fellow of SAICE, he was Director-General of South Africa’s Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (1997-2005), responsible for new policy and legislation; investment programmes that gave millions of people access to safe water and sanitation; and water-sharing negotiations with Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho that unlocked major investments.

He was a Commissioner of South Africa’s first National Planning Commission (2010-2015) and chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Water Security (2012-14) and currently advises a variety of organisations from local to global level. He has published on water, natural resources, development and global change and has a particular interest in Southern African integration and development including cooperative approaches to achieving regional food and water security in the face of climate challenges.

Previously, he managed infrastructure and policy programmes at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (1988-1994) and water programmes for the Mozambique Government (1979-1988).
